If someone asked me to show a fifties pin-up it would look a lot like this shot. Seamless paper background, a half-hearted effort at elegance, little or no prop budget, but above it all a fairly attractive woman. The background color looks as dated as the opera gloves. From a modern perspective the blue seems to make the picture too dark and somber, but the piano-key border Playboy added to bring the proportion in line helps matters. The shadow provides a nice balance. I don't know what it is with opera gloves. With a ball gown they look great, but as the last piece of clothing a woman takes off - not so much. Maybe I didn't see enough strippers in the thirties and forties to gain an appreciation of the finer points of opera gloves. Margie looks great, of course, and she looks like she's ready for about anything. I can't really call this shot inspired so much as workmanlike. More importantly, this stock calendar shot, selected by Hef, shows the class and understated sexuality that were to become Playboy highlights.
