In Jackie Rainbow's centerfold (September 1954) the photographer has dipped into pin-up themes that go back to the days before most homes were lit by electricity. Keeping in mind that many rural areas did not have electric lights until the 1930's, this theme could still resonate to a fifties audience. It's still good today. I could be making way too much of this, because what we really have here is a fairly nice picture of a pretty girl. She just happens to have a candle like was used to guide people up to bed. What can happen in a bed with a pretty, naked young woman hasn't changed much in an ice age or two, so even those of us that grew up with electricity can relate to the proceedings. Not a lot to talk about here in terms of composition, etc. The pose is very open. The innocence and light of Jackie seems a strong contrast to the harder and more direct look of Arline Hunter in the previous month. Playboy has continued both these themes over the years to great success. It's interesting to see some of the early examples.
