To: pml1@yahoogroups.com Subject: [PML1] CC: Marguerite Empey I From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Fri, 27 Jun 2003 08:50:08 -0400 Playboy did not produce Marguerite Empey's first centerfold (May 1955) (it is a stock calendar shot on a photographer's set) but it was a shot that foreshadowed what was to come. There's no implied situation, and that's fine. Having Marguerite in this pose accomplishes two important things. First, it shows off her stunning legs. Marguerite was the first famous "California" pin-up model, a style that unfortunately Playboy is in danger of running into the ground. The emphasis here is not on a sense of voluptuousness, but on athleticism. A toned and fit body is more important than a curvy one, and Marguerite is definitely fit and toned. Secondly, her pose makes strong sweeping lines across the entire frame. None of the lines are parallel or at right angles to the picture. This gives a sense of motion, dynamism and life that contrasts sharply with the style of pin-ups from the early part of the twentieth century, and is a style Playboy would follow for most of its work. Yet another precursor to the Playboy style is the look on Marguerite's face. Direct and inviting, the invitation is to get together and celebrate sex, not to get down and dirty.
