To: pml1@yahoogroups.com Subject: [PML1] CC: Janet Pilgrim I From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 09:03:02 -0400 I'll be reviewing each of Janet Pilgrim's centerfolds separately. In her first centerfold (July 1955) Playboy was embarking on a new concept. They wanted to break away from the pin-up traditions of the big calendar houses like Brown & Bigelow, but they still wanted the same sense of class and refinement. A lot of care and thought went into the making of this photograph, and it is a winner. Simply put, there are no random elements here. Two major lines define the composition. The first runs from the powder puff, through Janet's eyes to the head of Hef's silhouette in the doorway. The second runs from Janet's breasts down through the bottles of perfume on the table. The first two things a man notices about a woman are her eyes. Having the major axes of the picture run through the first two and the second two things that a man notices was not an accident. It's also no accident that Janet is posed to bring out the fullness of her breasts, her second best physical feature. Again, no accident that Janet has this particular expression. This subtle yet direct sexuality without the crudeness of a more overt come-on is what continues to separate Playboy from its competition.
