To: pml1@yahoogroups.com Subject: [PML1] CC: Marguerite Empey II From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Fri, 27 Jun 2003 08:51:19 -0400 The legendary Russ Meyer, a man not known for his subtlety, photographed Marguerite Empey's second centerfold (February 1956). He's captured her in the midst of breakfast in bed. It would be appropriate to imagine that we've brought this breakfast to Marguerite on Mother's Day, as she is obviously pregnant. There is a definite curve to her stomach and darkened nipples. But to concentrate on her pregnant state is to miss the point. You couldn't even say the word "pregnant" on television at this time, so it seems unlikely that it was the conscious focus of the centerfold. Mies van der Rohe said, "Less Is More." Russ Meyer ignored him. This is probably one of the busiest centerfolds in Playboy history. From the top: Marguerite's hair, jewelry, make-up, the striped blouse, coffee in one hand, toast in the other, the overloaded platter and the obvious curves in the bed sheets. Each item is complex, rich and full. Just when you think nothing else could be added, it is. In art this style is called "baroque". What Russ and Mies have in common is the ability to work successfully in a style that is often done only as a cheap copy.
