To: pml1@yahoogroups.com Subject: [PML1] CC: Sally Sarell From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 08:52:23 -0400 In Sally Sarell's centerfold (March 1960) she's in her studio, but it's not clear if we are a customer or her model, nor is it clear if we are going to have our first or subsequent erotic encounter of the day. These are ambiguities that add to the success of this centerfold. This foldout is very much an Esquire pin-up brought to life. The setting, the model's expression, and the way Sally is not really as nude as she looks. I just love the placement of Sally's arms. They look so completely natural, yet they provide the covering that was required in the time. The pants are interesting as well. Completely opaque, yet there is a hint of a "doe's foot" that no censor could complain about. The pants are also interesting in that they are splashed with paint. On an artistic level, they add a color accent. Yet in the implied situation, they tell us that Sally is the painter, not the model. This puts her act of slipping off (or is it putting on?) her top in a completely different light, and gives her a sense of power that wasn't generally portrayed in the media until years later.
