In Joni Mattis' centerfold (November 1960) she curled up in our bed. She 
looks game for about anything, including what's probably the second 
go-round. That is, if we're up to it.

Joni went on record saying she didn't like her centerfold and thought 
that it wasn't well liked because she "didn't show anything". Proof, I 
think, that self-criticism can be the most inaccurate kind.

Joni looks great here, capturing a sly look of invitation that never 
rings false. She's obviously looking forward to a good time, knows how 
that's likely to happen and knows how to make it happen. How many of the 
"good bits" you can see is, to a point, irrelevant. We can assume 
they're there, and Joni is telling us we won't find them disappointing.

The striped sheets don't overwhelm the subject. The straight lines of 
the lower sheet paired with the twisted lines of the upper as it winds 
around the twisted Joni make for a pleasing contrast, as does the solid 
wall. The fruit and coffee cup provide a hint of the setting, but more 
importantly give the picture a sense of grounding and stability.

I wish we had seen Joni's graceful style more often.
