Maybe our shower should wait. Centerfolds from this time tend to be more monochromatic than their later cousins. Part of this, I think, was a lack of technical sophistication in the color print process and some of it was simply the fashion of the day. There's nothing inherently wrong with that as is aptly borne out here. It's amazing how much weight that cup of orange juice carries in the total picture. It draws our eyes to Susan's lovely face, and it is a perfect accent to the carpeting on the stairs. It's an interesting exercise to speculate on the impact of this centerfold without the nightgown. On the one hand its lack would give this photo a much more intimate and sensual feel, with actual skin being the dominant element rather than cloth. On the other hand, since that carpeting on the stairs dominates the background, maybe we need the nightgown for balance. I don't think we make enough of things that are nice. We're too drawn to the spectacular. Here is a perfectly nice picture that's worth extended study.
