In Roberta Lane's centerfold (April 1962) she's talking on the 
telephone. They wouldn't have called it this forty years ago, but we 
can be fairly sure it's a booty call.

The centerfold is set in a "rec" room, supposedly a wholesome, 
harmless setting where teenagers could be themselves while still 
within parental supervisory distance. Here it's used to blend 
innocence and sophistication, a Playboy trademark that increasingly 
seems to be relegated to its history.

Roberta looks great here. She's posed to give an early sixties sense 
of modesty while still showing off her very striking and attractive 
figure. The make-up and blue jeans also work very well for her. With 
this make-up and pose, she reminds me a lot of Laura Petrie. That may 
not be a coincidence.

The composition of the photo is very formal, with the dartboard and 
Seven-Up bottle key accents to Roberta's curving form. The pastels 
are an excellent choice for Roberta. The fact that they are also 
style cues from the period is secondary in this case, which is as it 
should be.

The only slight downer is Roberta's expression. I would have 
preferred a look that showed more commitment to the proceedings.
