In Marya Carter's centerfold (May 1962) she was working on her all-over 
tan when we surprised her. We should stick around. It looks like this 
might be our lucky day.

This centerfold does a better-than-average job of working within the 
editorial constraints of its time. Modesty has prevailed, but there is 
no doubt that we are in the presence of a very attractive and very 
sensual young woman. Of course you can't see all the bits, but there is 
enough there to convince all but the dull-witted that Marya is worth our 
time.

Marya looks especially good among the rocks. Her pink bikini keeps her 
from getting lost. The shadow patterns seem to point to this photo being 
an outside job, but here the shadows never intrude. The strong curving 
diagonal that Marya is stretched out along works quite well as the main 
compositional element, with Marya's left leg and arms adding appropriate 
foils to the main line.

This very natural, very outdoorsy centerfold is one example of how far 
Playboy had come in less than ten years from the stock studio calendar 
nudes that made up the early gatefolds. 40 years on I'm still awed by 
the new style.
