When this centerfold came out, a friend of mine who had barricaded himself in his house during the 1967 Detroit Riots for fear of attack by roving gangs (Detroit's 136 miles away) saw an African-American woman as a possible sexual partner for the very first time. Before that, any fantasies involving sex with a Black woman included the exchange of cash. I won't say this picture turned him around, but it did challenge some of his assumptions. I think Jean's face does issue a challenge, but it's not to White American guilt. It's more basic than that. The held towel, the posture that says she could make her next move away from us as well as towards us, all point to a seduction in progress. No done deals here. The posture also brings out the delightful curve of her breasts, indicating that maybe we should get on with that seduction. The only really down side to this pin-up are the butterflies. I've never thought they added anything to the centerfold except confusion.
