To: pml1@yahoogroups.com Subject: [PML1] CC: Barbara Hillary From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2003 09:58:45 -0500 What is the female counterpart to a phallic symbol? That's what we find in Barbara Hillary's centerfold (April 1970). The white beanbag chair is arranged in an egg shape, and I get a strong feeling of fertility, motherhood and fecundity. It works pretty well as an erotic image as well. The soft, zaftig Barbara has a "dive right in" look to her. Hey, fine with me. There is a seventies ethic that has worked its way into the shot, which almost could have originated at the turn of the last century. Barbara has an unbound quality to her. It's more than just burning her bra; it's an attitude that she wants this encounter herself. This is not going to be the "close your eyes and think of England" type of encounter. More obviously, the red shag rug and beanbag chair speak to a seventies time frame as well. A lot of that style was pretty silly, but here the excess has been reduced to give us just the background and the white oval of the chair framing Barbara. I'm not sure we need the flowers. Barbara fits very well graphically, yet manages to still strike an absolutely natural pose. I'm also big fan of her shot in the 1971 "Bunnies Of New York" pictorial. http://cyber.playboy.com/members/playmates/files/1970/04/centerfold.html http://cyber.playboy.com/members/playmates/files/1970/04/03-lrg.html Mark Tomlonson Kalamazoo MI
