The set in this centerfold isn't sophisticated so much as it has the idea of sophistication. It's the sophistication of those who aspire to be sophisticated, particularly those middle-class, middle-western guys that drive Camaros. It's not bad, the light tan leather against the strong red background being a particularly attractive touch. The set rests solidly in the middle-class background of Playboy's founder, not in the urbane sophistication the magazine promised. This does not take away one whit from Martha, or the way she's posed. It's good, competent pin-up work all the way around. Martha was too shy to show much when she first appeared in a "Girls Of . . . " feature. We should all be glad she lost some modesty. She looks great, and looks so happy to see us. Her pose is worth a word or two. I get a sense of motion, even flight. I think the position of Martha's right arm, and the way it pulls her teddy in a parabolic curve is responsible. It's clever and subtle, and along with the middle-ish sense of sophistication is a Playboy hallmark.
