To: pml1@yahoogroups.com From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Thu, 07 Aug 2003 21:34:57 -0400 Subject: [PML1] CC: Heidi Sorenson In Heidi Sorenson's centerfold (July 1981) she's leaning against the arm of a chair, issuing a clear invitation that can be mistaken for nothing else. Heidi's fantastic body is what this centerfold is all about. It's been lit in a way that plays up its warmth and smoothness. There is a natural quality to it. It's not the rock-hard tone of an athlete, but neither is it the soft roundness of a Ruebens subject. Heidi's torso has been arranged in a way to show off the classic female form. No compromises have been made in its position, nothing needs to be covered up, and we can enjoy the reasons the female nude has been a subject for artists for centuries. Heidi's expression is good, but it's a minor element here. We get a bit of the big hair blowing in the fan that was popular in the eighties, but it's subtle enough that we can see why the look became popular in the first place. The underlying composition is first rate, but also a minor element. Its biggest contribution is showing off Heidi's torso without turning her into an object. Her pose indicates this is a real person, not marble.
