Playboy's detractors have often accused it of downgrading women, making them unthinking accessories to men's sexual fantasies. They obviously have not seen this picture. Ruth knows what she wants, when she wants it and how she wants it. If we can't provide it, then she'll get it from someone else. This seems to be a woman who's thinking an awful lot. The great thing about this picture is that Ruth can project all this independence and liberation without being a ball-breaker. There is something in her pose or expression that puts the emphasis on her getting what she wants, not on her taking it from us. I only wish I could put my finger on it. I know I wouldn't mind putting my finger on Ruth. The pose leaves nothing to the imagination. What we see is the classic female form after some healthful exercise. To the Classics, Ruth would have seemed a little too skinny, but in our eyes she's the epitome of what Mark Gabor calls the "California" model: slim, lithe, limber and fit. It's fine by me.
