It's a stock calendar shot that PEI bought for the fledgling magazine. It's not even a centerfold, as it's only two pages in size. But it shows some of the qualities that were to become major parts of the Playboy style. First, of course, is a very attractive model. In some fifties pin-ups, models were selected for their willingness to disrobe, and little else. Some modern shots also suffer. Dolores, fortunately, is not that kind of girl. Secondly is an expression that pulls the viewer relentlessly into the picture. Dolores comes through with a sad look that harkens to the meaning of her name. Something has made her sad, and which man jack of us wouldn't rush to comfort a sad woman, especially if she's beautiful and naked? Thirdly is an artistic structure that is first rate. Here we have Dolores, her hair ribbon, the hassock, the red background and lights. All are perfectly placed and contribute in an interlocking way to the success of the shot. It's high-style fifties pin-up at its best. So maybe you don't see all that. Still, we'll always have Dolores.
