In Neva Gilbert's centerfold (July 1954) she's inviting us to join her 
on the tiger skin. I'm game!

This is Playboy's eighth center spread but the second with an animal 
hide as the main decorative element. It looks like animal skins were 
more popular in pin-ups then than they are now.

This is also Playboy's second center spread by Tom Kelley. The tone and 
style are very much like Marilyn's photo.

Even with all that I'm seeing something in this picture that I didn't 
see in the previous Playboy center spreads. There is an attitude here 
that was missing earlier. Sure we've been invited to join the model 
before, but there is something different about this invitation that 
makes it stand out. I think it's the combination of innocence and 
sophistication that I've seen in more than a few of the later centerfolds.

The pose really does a great job of showing off Neva's legs. You hardly 
notice the fig leaf, which is as it should be. Neva's birthmark 
pre-dates Cindy Crawford's and it looks just as good. The make-up and 
hair are a little dated but in no way do they attract from the essential 
beautiful woman.
