By the time she posed for her third centerfold (October 1956) the bloom 
had fallen off the rose. The office romance with Hef had fizzled, and 
Charlaine Karalus only reluctantly agreed to play the part of Janet 
Pilgrim one more time.

You can read all about it in the histories of Playboy, and you can see
it written all over Charlaine's face. This is not a woman who is
enjoying herself. The setting also tells a lot, although perhaps only
in retrospect. In contrast to the first two centerfolds set in bright,
optimistic worlds, this one is set in a dark, somewhat gloomy bar with
hard liquor lining the walls.

The photographer again has selected a pose that brings out Janet's 
breasts. I don't think this is because Janet only looks good from one 
angle, or because the photographer suffers from a lack of imagination, 
but because Playboy wasn't sure how much nudity the major, A-line 
advertisers they were courting would be willing to accept.

The photographer once again has excelled at a strong composition that
flatters the model, a winning pose, first-rate lighting and a great
composition, but it's all for naught. Charlaine just wasn't into it
anymore.
