To: pml1@yahoogroups.com Subject: [PML1] CC: Ann Davis From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 09:14:04 -0400 For Ann Davis's centerfold story (September 1960), Playboy's editors gathered several fine artists together to use her as inspiration for interpretations of the female form. When they're done well, Playboy's gatefolds can hold their own in this kind of crowd. Even when they're not, it's usually apparent that artistic values, as well as the erotic, have a role in their creation. Given that, it's surprising the artistic values are not stronger here. They're O.K., but not strong. In particular the background threatens to overwhelm rather than support. Ann looks stunning in this photograph. I am absolutely captivated by her smile and wholesome look. I'm having trouble with the unflattering pose chosen for her. While the way Ann blends into the spiral stair is very good, reinforcing an intriguing curve, there is another problem. Ann has a body like most women, i.e. slightly pear shaped. Nothing wrong with that at all, especially on Ann, but the pose chosen for her accentuates the size of her thighs. The thighs are not so large they need to be hidden or downplayed, just not accented. Either of the photos in the Cyber Club portfolio would have been better choices. But there is that smile.
