To: pml1@yahoogroups.com Subject: [PML1] CC: Nancy Jo Hooper From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2003 10:37:57 -0400 In Nancy Jo Hooper's centerfold (February 1964) she's laying down on a sofa, slowly rolling towards us. She doesn't appear to be rolling over for a game of Backgammon. 1,000 years from now this will be an easy centerfold to place in its proper time. It's simple, pure, monochromatic and angular: a sign of the early sixties. It's the style the hippies rebelled against. Here it's done very well. There is a strong drive to the horizontal, both with the sofa and the shutters. Vertical elements are present, but as minor ornaments. This will also be an easy centerfold to place because of the way the fig leaf is handled, and here we see the weakness. Having Nancy throw her left leg over adds a sense of motion, but her shoulders are too flat. It looks like her left shoulder has been fastened to the sofa. If she were actually rolling over, there might be a fraction of an instant when she would be in this very position, but it is less than flattering to stop the action at this point. The Cyber Club photo is much more complimentary to Nancy Jo, and would have been a much better choice.
