In Gay Collier's centerfold (July 1965) she's doffing her hat as we 
spend a day at the beach.

Oh, that damn hat! It has to be about the goofiest thing ever to hit a 
Playboy centerfold. Goofy and sexy aren't mutually exclusive, but there 
had to have been a better choice somehow. In terms of the composition, 
that huge yellow flower plays a couple of important parts. It fills up 
an otherwise blank spot in the frame and it adds a bit of contrasting 
color. A nice cloud would have made a good substitute, but photographers 
can't order them up at will. Perhaps a yellow scarf blowing in the 
breeze would have worked, but breezes don't always cooperate either.

I wouldn't change a thing about Gay's pose. Her figure looks 
jaw-droppingly, stunningly beautiful. Every time I look at this picture 
I want to run my hands inside that beach jacket (after taking the hat 
off first!)

While this overcast day may not have provided clouds or a breeze, it did 
provide a wonderful even and shadowless lighting. The slight contortion 
to Gay's legs and torso fit with the mood of the picture, and add 
wonderful graphic tension.
