To: pml1@yahoogroups.com Subject: [PML1] CC: Debbie Hooper From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Fri, 23 Jan 2004 22:47:12 -0500 It's almost the definition of irony that Hugh Hefner, who will go down in history, rightly or wrongly, as the father of the sexual revolution so completely misunderstood the Hippies' "Free Love" message. Playboy never knew what to make of the Hippies. Of course, most of the major media didn't have a clue, either. In Debbie Hooper's centerfold (August 1969) and in her Playmate of the Month feature Playboy made a valiant and not completely unsuccessful stab at it. The problem was that Playboy was an institution, and the Hippies were by definition anti-institutional. Playboy was the middle-aged guy at a frat party trying to convince the college students he was still hip. Despite all that, I've always liked Debbie's centerfold. The outdoor setting works very well, and her completely spontaneous pose at least is a true copy of the Hippie ethic. The fact that it does wonderful things for her figure and turns her from a beautiful woman into a stunner is what Playboy has always done best. The low-rise jeans that are seeing a revival were a bit into the future in 1969. That's too bad, as they would have been an improvement here.
