To: pml1@yahoogroups.com Subject: [PML1] CC: Madeline & Mary Collinson From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2003 20:20:52 -0400 In Madeleine and Mary Collinson's centerfold (October 1970) they are standing next to a double bed with a clear invitation to join them, an invitation that never loses sight of Playboy's trademark good taste and class. This was the first time Playboy tried two women in the same centerfold. In this case, twins. Playboy has set itself up with a rather serious editorial problem in showing multiple Playmates. They want, obviously, to show the twins as beautiful women and as sexual women. They also want to hint at some of the various permutations possible while (at least in the seventies) staying far away from an inference of lesbian incest. Here, they've succeeded. Both Madeleine and Mary are shown off to great advantage. They both have skin that cries out to be touched and the lighting and total lack of costume in the centerfold really plays to this strength. Story has it that the photographer went through sheet after sheet of 8 x 10 film (not cheap by any measure) trying to catch just the right expression. Again, we have overwhelming success in a perfect blend of coyness and directness. The simple set is an excellent contrast to everything else.
