To: pml1@yahoogroups.com Subject: [PML1] CC: Martha Smith From: Mark Tomlonson Date: Thu, 16 Oct 2003 10:29:43 -0400 In Martha Smith's centerfold (July 1973) she's been waiting for us, and we arrive just as she's plucked a petal from the flower behind her. The seventies do not have a reputation for an abundance of good taste in design. This is not only applied to Our Favorite Magazine, but to fashion and industrial design. Martha's centerfold shows that the elements can come together and make a pleasing whole. Typical of the seventies pin-up is the overall "gauzy" effect, especially around Martha's face. It doesn't look to me like we're looking at Martha through Vaseline, but rather the light behind her has been manipulated. You can't describe this pose as anything but full frontal nudity, but in the usual Playboy style nothing is pulled or prodded; what you see is what you get. It's striking to me how closely the color of the blossoms matches the color of Martha's nipples. You think maybe make-up could be responsible for this? The look of invitation on Martha's face is both attractive and genuine, matching the pose. Martha's slight twist on the sofa does good things for her figure, at the same time giving the centerfold a sense of life and action.
