In Valerie Lane's centerfold (October 1973) we find ourselves enjoying
a loaf of bread and a jug of wine. Soon we will be finishing that
famous verse in our own way.

Humans are wired to respond to a sense of intimacy. Most of us can
respond sexually without it, but nearly all of us feel that an
intimate encounter is better than a random one. Intimacy is what
drives this photograph.

The sense starts with Valerie's expression. This is a friend, a
partner who is looking at us. We are on familiar territory. The sense
is brought to full flower with the treatment of Valerie's
breasts. First, in the pose that highlights their rounded and three
dimensional form; secondly, in the light shining on them through the
gauze blouse; and thirdly, the way the open blouse and the camera have
been arranged so that our eyes take their own journey into Valerie's
clothing. That journey doesn't stop at her chest, but continues
downward.

Valerie is a very beautiful woman, with a patrician look that remains
accessible. A strong geometric construction adds to the photograph's
appeal. This is a real tour-de-force for both the photographers and
the model.
