This is a perfect example of how important a model's expression is to the success of a pin-up. I look at Samantha's face and see complete and utter boredom. If you look up ennui in the dictionary, this expression would be there. In all my fantasies, sexual and otherwise, boredom plays a very small role. The rest of the photograph is actually pretty good. I like the pose. It's uncommon and it works very well for Samantha. I like how warm and accessible she seems. I like how the right side of the photograph is all reds and the left is all blues. In particular I like how Samantha's blonde hair blends into the sunset which blends into the reds of her dress which blend into the darker reds of the lifeguard tower. To see all this good stuff I need to cover up her face. Samantha is not a paper bag date. Again I find myself asking Playboy's editors "What the hell were you thinking?" Samantha doesn't need to turn into Pollyanna, but she also shouldn't look like she wishes I'd just get it over with.
