The setting of this centerfold is very good: the warm lights coming from the jukebox, the pastel tiles on the floor, the brocade wall covering, but this centerfold defines opportunity lost. To put it bluntly, neither of these women is in my eyes Playmate material. They have neither the body nor the face with that certain something that I look for in a Playmate: that something that makes me go "Wow." Different Playmates do this in different ways, but the "Wow" factor should always be there. This centerfold was Playboy's way of kicking off the millennium. It was the result (we're told) of a year long, nationwide search. With all that hype, you'd think this centerfold would have been something worth celebrating. In their defense, both Carol and Darlene have wonderful expressions here. There's a good mix of the "Oh, we couldn't do that!" and the "Wouldn't you love to?" that's a Playboy tradition. But these women belong as a footnote in the "World Of Playboy", not in the centerfold. To clarify, I think both Carol and Darlene are attractive women. I don't care at all for the tattoos, but that's just a sign I'm getting old. It's only when you consider them in the rarified strata of Playmates that they fall short. They're attractive enough to be in Playboy in a "Girls of Miami" pictorial, but they just don't have that extra bit that makes a Playmate. Mark Tomlonson Kalamazoo MI
