I noticed that several of the 2002 centerfolds pay homage to earlier work. Playboy has done this before, but I don't remember it being so close on the original's heels. Consider: Vanessa's and Michele's hairstyles are the same, as are their expressions. In Michele's centerfold her arm closes her dress at her sternum, in Vanessa's a button does the honor. The position of their torsos is the same: the "Playmate from the skylight" pose. Vanessa's centerfold is red while Michele's is dark blue. The position of their legs is the most different. The real test in a case like this is whether the copy can stand up to the original. In this case I'd say yes. Michele is set in a very urban and urbane setting: the Playboy Penthouse. More importantly, the mood and pose work at least as well this time as the first. Would I have preferred an entirely original work? Yes. But I often perform music that was written hundreds of years ago, and still manage to find new meaning. I'm not sure this performance is worth an encore.
